The IRS announced the appointment of Erin M. Collins to the position of National Taxpayer Advocate (NTA) on March 30. Collins has an extensive background in the tax community, including 20 years as a Managing Director of KPMG’s Tax Controversy Services practice for the Western Area. In addition to her private sector work, she previously served as an attorney in the IRS Office of Chief Counsel and has provided pro bono services to taxpayers to resolve disputes with the IRS.
The Taxpayer Advocacy Service (https://www.irs.gov/taxpayer-advocate) is an independent organization within the IRS which helps taxpayers and protects taxpayer rights. The Service helps taxpayers who need assistance resolving an IRS problem, if their problem is causing financial difficulty, or if they believe an IRS system or procedure isn’t working as it should. The Advocacy Service is currently open to receive calls, but has suspended walk-in services until further notice due to the Coronavirus threat.
